My Gramma Ruth is in the Health Center at Friendsview, after spending last weekend in the hospital. Her CHF (congestive heart failure) is catching up with her. For a ninty-seven-and-a-half-year-old, she is doing exceptionally well! The things that are happening now her doctor expected to see over two years ago. Her body is getting tired, but her spirit is still as strong and sweet as ever.
Yesterday she really looked like she would pass away soon. She appeared to be in a really deep sleep for most of the day, and she wasn’t responding much. We (my parents, Uncle Bob, and Aunt Barbara, and I) all went down the hall to a meeting with the very nice hospice ladies, and after a couple of hours we came back to her room. There she was sitting on the edge of her bed getting herself ready to take a ride in her wheelchair. We were so amazed! And overjoyed. It really was awesome.
A little bit later we were in her room (discussing the events of the last few days with her), when a Friendsview worker poked her head in the room. Gramma Ruth said with a straight face, “Do thyself no harm, we are all here.” (!) She was quoting Acts 16:28 (King James Version of course), where Paul shouted at the jailer to keep him from stabbing himself after the earthquake. [You can read the whole story in verses 16 through 40.]
What a beautiful sense of humor! And this, after we thought she might not even talk again! Here’s another quote from her. “Just because I’m 97, they’re trying to find things wrong with me.” Apparently she doesn’t feel too bad physically, which is a real blessing.
It’s unanimous. We all want to be like her in our old age!
